'Attention and Listening in the Early Years'
Also known as 'Listen with Lucy'

“Listening and Attention are a major part of the EYFSP as children cannot achieve a ‘Good Level of Development’ at the end of the key stage without it. Today has given me a bank of ideas to work with children who need to improve their skills”

 Early Years Coordinator, Shropshire 2014

A circle-time group run by Early Years Practitioners, Speech and Language Therapists or Assistants, Children's Centre staff and Childminders, with the aim of helping young children develop listening, attention and concentration skills, and so support their ability to learn, including  their ability to learn language.

Evaluation by those who have previously trained to run ‘Attention and Listening in the Early Years         included:

‘sits very well within the EYFS framework linking with speaking and listening and letters and sounds'
'provides a very structured framework... we can use with... children... who have particular needs both with behaviour and language skills (and) children who need help to build their confidence'
'very useful as already packaged with sessions planned'
‘there was a significant improvement in (the children’s) concentration and listening skills’
'a good programme to use in clinic with children who have delayed communication skills'
'can see it being used within the traditional language group model...between parent-child interaction therapy and concept based group'
'a fantastic resource for Speech and Language Assistants'
'We would strongly recommend all settings to consider 'Listen with Lucy' as it empowers practitioners to work more effectively with groups of children with proven results'.
Reviews received for the book 'Attention and Listening in the Early Years', on which the course is based, included:
  • 'extremely accessible for playgroup and preschool leaders and SLTs... will be very useful for the preschool staff it targets' Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists; December 2009.

  • 'Overall I would recommend this book to Early Years practitioners, especially those looking for enjoyable and alternative ideas for circle time. It would also be useful for recently qualified SLTs working in preschool settings and student SLTs. I was inspired to try out some of the activities in a small language group for three year old children, and found them very successful!' National Association of Professionals Concerned with Language Impairment in Children; 2010

  • '...will be of particular benefit to student SLTs, newly qualified therapists and assistants, or for therapists to recommend to other Early Years practitioners' Speech and Language Therapy in Practice; Spring 2010

  • 'An innovative course of ideas by Sharon Garforth for groups of children aged 2-4 years, built around themes such as the park or the zoo; to help them to pay attention by sitting still, not talking, looking at the speaker and thinking about the spoken words - all vital skills for good listening. Sessions last around 15 minutes making this an ideal resource for early years practitioners and speech and language therapists as an alternative to circle time' Sense Toys 2012
